Shenington Kart Racing Club takes top award

Shenington’s Mike Coombs & Graham Smith receiving the JLT/MSA Club of Year award

Shenington Kart Racing Club won the 2012 JLT MSA Club of the Year award of a £1000 cheque and immense silver rosebowl amongst all the motorsport clubs in the UK.  Chairman Mike Coombs and Secretary Graham Smith attended the MSA Night of Champions on 19th January at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall to receive the award.  The citation was read out by sports personality and commentator Steve Ryder – “Shenington Kart Racing Club is one of the most popular and well run kart club in the UK, with a good local feel and respected national image, who work hard to introduce new schemes to reduce costs for competitors, including links with sponsors and traders. Despite the relative simplicity of their venue, they work tirelessly to improve and develop their product and to attract more members of all age groups, but especially focussing on the juniors. With around 300 members, they have benefited from MSA Club Development Grants to assist with their venue improvements, and they have also introduced modern timing equipment and displays to result in better engagement for officials, parents and spectators alike. A busy calendar meant that unfortunately the club was unable to organise additional events to support National Motorsport Week in 2012, although they have supported the initiative in previous years.  They have also successfully raised funds for local charities, notably the Chiltern Air Ambulance.”

Mike Coombs, Chairman of the club said: “It is an immense honour for our kart club to win this award, especially considering the amount of effort so many clubs have put in this year to keep numbers up. Thanks to our committee’s initiatives we have had some success in attracting drivers with small budgets to carry on or start racing.”
